    Wham! Baam! Thank you, ma’am

    Thursday, September 18, 2025 –

Last weekend I was able to knock three places off my list!

Pincho’s limited edition collab with onetime Houston GOAT Bernie’s Burger Bus. This was their recreation of the Cheerleader, comprised of a black angus patty topped with pepper jack, beer-battered jalapeños, slow-roasted garlic tomatoes, lettuce, and cilantro-jalapeño aioli.

I modified it with a fried egg, applewood smoked bacon, pickles, and Texas-style double smash patties.

This was the Boom Baam “Build a Tower,” comprised of double beef, cheese, lettuce, pickles, grilled jalapeños, onions, and Boom Baam sauce, plus beef links, bacon, egg, and avocado.

The Top 25 Hamburgers, Top 20 Smashburgers, and Top 8 Restaurant Burgers in Houston (Updated June 2026)

Best Houston Burgers, Best Houston Smashburgers and Best Restaurant Burger Power Rankings

    Updated June 8, 2026 [Originally published May 1, 2026] —

For those new to the Larry Burger Experience, who am I and why does my opinion matter?

I’m a native New Yorker who has called Houston home for the past 13 years, and I am utterly obsessed with hamburgers. I have tried burgers at well over 100 different places across the Greater Houston Area—including almost every smashburger joint in town (that I know of)—I maintain a crazy-detailed spreadsheet of every place I’ve been (along with spots I still ned to visit); and began chronicling my beef-seeking exploits on this website a few years ago. (I also inspired burger-chan to release a limited-edition Blue Cheese Burger in Fall 2024; and have a top-secret upcoming collaborative burger being released with one of the best smashburger spots in the game at the end of June).

In July 2025 I finally published My Top 30 Hamburgers in Houston Power Rankings list, which I am thrilled to share is the top organic search on Google for “best burgers Houston.”

And I am convinced that there is no better city in the entire country for hamburgers than Houston (and that’s coming from a New Yorker!).

So with all of that said, I think it’s safe to say I’ve got some burger credibility.

In any case, since I originally published my Power Rankings list last summer, my preferences have shifted quite a bit.

For the longest time I considered myself something of a burger purist, preferring a traditional-sized patty. I still love a classic substantive burger, but I admit I’ve fallen head-over-heels for the smashburger since last fall, and have found myself increasingly seeking smashes out over “regular” burgers.

That is of course not to say that I only want smashes of late—but it has caused me to rethink how I evaluate and rate burgers, because I believe the smashburger to be an almost entirely different beast from a standard burger.

Yes, both share beefy DNA, but the prep and cook (and most importantly, char!) are so vastly different—not to mention smashes in my opinion benefit from fewer toppings, which also flies wildly in the face of my longheld desire to put everything-and-the-kitchen-sink on my burgers—that in order to accurately rate Houston’s hamburger scene, we have to separate out the regular hamburgers from the smashes.

Now—there are going to be some entries in the hamburger category that could be considered more in the smash category by some folks, but for me, a smash is pretty clearly defined by the thinness of the patties.

This list is open to any and all burgers from places I’ve consumed hamburgers from in the Greater Houston Area, regardless of when I first ate at a given establishment. While I love data, there isn’t a scientific method here to my ratings. These are the burger places that I get the most visibly excited about when people ask me for my recommendations—the places that, when I want to revisit something I know and love, vault to top of mind.

UPDATED June 8, 2026: I decided to walk back my restaurant burger exclusion (if you’re interested in my previous thinking behind not including this cohort; I’ve saved it for posterity, below), and at the end of this post I have added a separate category for my Top 8 Houston Restaurant Burgers.

Lastly—I’m specifically excluding restaurant burgers from both the new Top “Classic” Burgers list and the new Top Smashburgers list.

Not that I don’t want to give love to restaurants that sling a killer burger, but when I think about burgers—I never think about a restaurant burger first. I almost always think about a spot that specifically specializes primarily in burgers—though as you’ll see, this thought process does not necessarily apply to fast casual / food trucks.

I just feel like with restaurants, because they tend to offer so many other, different items than a burger—and most of the time you’re not going to a restaurant just for the burger (unless you’re me)—it’s really hard to compare restaurant burger offerings against the places where the beef takes center stage.

Here’s the link to my Master Houston Burger Tracking Spreadsheet.

Here also is my 2025 Wrap-Up of Best New Houston Burgers.

(Note: all photos were taken by me unless noted otherwise).

    Houston’s Top 25 “Classic” Burgers

    (Photo: Rodeo Goat)

    25) Rodeo Goat

This Dallas-originated chain is one of the very first burger spots in Houston that got my attention. I don’t get here often enough, but The Boadacious—comprised of a house-ground beef patty, American cheese, bacon, crispy onions, grilled jalapeños, pickles, smoked jalapeño mayo, and bodacious BBQ sauce, all on a brioche bun—has left a lasting-enough impression on me that I know this list isn’t complete without it.

    24) Hippo Burgers

Right out of the gate I knew I’d be happy with this substantially sized hamburger sandwich. The Hippo Blue Burger is comprised of a 1/2 pound Angus beef patty, bacon, bleu cheese, mayo, lettuce, and tomatoes. I added mustard, ketchup, pickles, jalapeños, and a fried egg, delivered on a generously sized (upside down!) potato bun. For me, this specific combination of toppings is almost as good as it gets—had they offered banana peppers, it would’ve been an all-time Larry burger.

    23) Bussit Down Eatery

Super-unique food truck on North Fry Rd in Katy. The SuppaRay14K Cinnaburger is a must-try—like nothing else I’ve eaten in Houston, and as delicious and gloriously indulgent as it sounds.

    22) Loaded Burger

Loaded’s Mango Habaňero Burger is comprised of two Halal beef patties with fresh mango habaňero salsa, lettuce, pickles, and loaded sauce, and this delightful and unique combination of savory ingredients is not something I’ve previously experienced.

Despite being loaded with goodies, the beef remained the star of the show—wonderfully cooked and seasoned. My only critique is that the patties were on the smaller side (at least for me) and I think I would’ve benefited from adding a third 😊.

    (Photo: Burger Joint)

    21) Burger Joint

I unabashedly love Burger Joint—though despite the fact that it only has a handful of locations I tend to mentally compartmentalize it in my head as a chain, which means I occasionally mentally sideline it. Not that chains can’t be excellent! I guess I’m just a bit of a romantic when it comes to the artfulness, tenacity, and uncompromising ideals of a completely independent business. At the end of the day though, I’d put the Smoke Stack—Angus beef stacked with pulled pork, mac & cheese, fried egg, slaw, and mayo—up against almost any entrant on this list, and it would probably win often in a blind taste test.

    20) Burger Daddy

Burger Daddy is a food truck I’d been wanting to try for a long time, but the timing never aligned prior to April 2026. I was able to finally track them down, and clearly I made a great decision, as their Spicy Double Cheeseburger, which was really flavorful with its beef well cooked and juicy, and just the right amount of heat, was memorable enough to make the top 20!

    19) Johnny Good Burger

I really enjoyed Johnny Good Burger’s take on the modern burger—the patties are hefty, but the construction and toppings on the burger are somewhat evocative of a smashburger experience. Flavors are on point, and this will fill you up quickly.

    18) Feges BBQ

Feges hit my radar after it seeing it ranked #4 on Houston tastemaker Shawn the Food Sheep’s Instagram. And I have to say, one Triple Cheeseburger later, I can see why. The above photo explains it all.

    17) Burger Boss to Go

Humbly situated on Hirsch Road just north of 610 on the northeast side, this burger stand is slinging some of the tastiest beef concoctions in town through a to-go window and nothing else. No seating, barely even any parking, this is Houston at its most authentic—with delicious food lovingly being prepared and offered up in a relatively nondescript setting—and tastiest.

I ordered the Meme Bacon Cheeseburger, which consists of a big-boy patty (no smashburger action here), lettuce, onion, tomato, bacon, cheese, and pickles, and I added jalapeños. The beef is absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked, and the overall oversized package and saporously indulgent flavor profile is reminiscent of old-school Houston burger faves ChampChunk, and the pride-and-joy of Humble, Mean Burger.

Make a point of slotting this place in as your next burger escapade, and you will not be disappointed.

    16) U.S.A. Burger

I enjoyed the juicy Double Cheeseburger at newcomer U.S.A. Burger on Kirkwood in the Westchase District this past summer. The beef was cooked and seasoned quite nicely, and the bun was also a stand out. All of the ingredients are there for an elevated experience, though my one note was that I’d love to see them coax just a tad more flavor from the toppings. Still, the beef was flavorful to the point of meriting Top 20 inclusion, so you know it’s high-quality.

    15) Boom Baam

Boom Baam has the distinction of offering the most unique concoction among the many wonderful burgers on this list. Housed in a gas station near the intersection of Highway 6 and Westheimer—Houstonians are well aware that some of the city’s best food can often be found in unexpected locations—relative Houston newcomer Boom Baam hit my socials last year with their tantalizing videos of delicious-looking burgers. I was thrilled to learn that upon trying the Build a Tower burger—comprised of double beef, cheese, lettuce, pickles, grilled jalapeños, onions, and Boom Baam sauce, plus beef links, bacon, egg, and avocado—it was most worthy of the 4.9 on Google and 4.7 on Yelp it had at the time of my initial visit, which had placed it in a tie for 6th-highest rated burger in all of Houston, per the massive spreadsheet I maintain of every burger I am aware of in Houston.

    14) Lankford Grocery

You can’t have a conversation around Houston’s best burgers without Lankford Grocery entering the chat. The eatery’s Grim Burger—fortified with a jalapeño-laden base, smothered with mac and cheese, and topped with bacon and a fried egg—is a carnivorous delight. Extra points for the flavor of the beef blend and seasoning of the patty still shining through under the weight of a plethora of delicious toppings.

    13) Chunk’s Burger

Located a bit off the beaten path in Stafford (nearly in Sugar Land), Chunk’s is almost in a category of its own. While it also evokes the no-frills classiness of the Champs and Old School Burgers of the world, its Double Bam Burger—which comes with two patties, bacon, cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo, mustard, and jalapeños—was substantially juicier than several in its cohort. Additionally, while Chunk’s doesn’t explicitly refer to its patties as smashed, I would almost call what they serve a hybrid—they weren’t quite as thin as a traditional smashburger, but they also weren’t enormous (plus, look at that char!). In some regards they were the ideal size—with some smashburgers I still find myself famished even after a double, but this meat delivery vehicle did not need a third patty to slake my insatiable hunger for beef.

    12) Bubba’s Texas Burger Shack

I’d originally sampled and loved the beef from Bubba’s (a top 15 overall spot in Houston for us) back in 2023, and it was finally time for a revisit. I ordered the Vegas Burger—double patties with Monterey Jack cheese, fried egg, bacon, avocado, & Bubba’s Hot Sauce (mild habañero), and also comes standard with mayonnaise, mustard, onion, lettuce, tomato, and pickles—and as expected, this was top-notch. Upon first juicy bite Bubba’s immediately reminded me why it was one of my top 5 favorite new-to-me burgers of 2023, with delectable and tender beef and an overall sandwich composition that demands a gluttonously expedient chomping. I’m amazed I even snapped this photo before basically inhaling this thing. There’s a reason the classics are designated as such, and Bubba’s continues to throw down with Houston’s best

    11) Stanton’s City Bites

If you’re a burger lover in Houston, chances are you don’t need me to tell you how awesome Stanton’s is. The longtime (seriously, it was founded in 1961!) Houston institution is part of an unofficial triumvirate of elite old-school burger purveyors alongside fellow stalwarts Lankford and Champ. The only negative thing I can say about Stanton’s is that it’s not as well-located to me as I’d like, and as such I don’t get there as often as I’d like, but that’s a me problem.

Last time I went, I had the Blue Moon Burger, which comes with crumbled blue cheese, grilled onions, bacon, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, and I added jalapeños, habañero mustard, a fried egg, and their Monster Sauce.

    10) Q’s Deli

Q’s Deli’s Triple Q Stack features 73/27 beef, jalapeños, chopped onion, bacon, American cheese, and their signature delicious and spicy Q Sauce on a jalapeño cheddar bun. The only other burger slinger I know of purveying that beef/fat ratio is Gastrocraft’s Dennis Feray, and so I knew I was in good company right out of the gate. The Q Stack is a near-perfect meat delivery concoction, with the beef perfectly cooked and the cheese and onions folded seamlessly into the proceedings. The seasoning is no frills—just salt and pepper—but the Q Sauce, featuring a proprietary blend of jalapeño, cilantro, and presumably a few other tasty ingredients, imparted just the right amount of heat to the experience. Owner Ali told me the Q Stack was created as his homage to the classic Whataburger double cheeseburger, and I can see that from a composition perspective—but the flavor of the Q Stack of course annihilates Whataburger’s serer-than-the-Sahara cook on its patties. Among the best burgers I first sampled in 2025.

    9) Champ Burger

Champ Burger is Houston burger royalty, having first flung its doors open 61 years ago. It jumped toward the top of my to-eat list when I began compiling my Houston burger rating tracking spreadsheet in 2024—at the time it stood out as the 8th-highest-rated burger in the entire Greater Houston area (if you go by Yelp) or tied with three others for 2nd (if you prefer Google ratings). For added context, this is a spreadsheet that today features nearly 200 places in and around Houston to grab a burger, and almost certainly still isn’t an exhaustive list!

Right out of the gate, its well-worn neighborhood feel and overall vibe—lengthy line at the order window and mostly outdoor seating—are immediately evocative of fellow Houston burger institutions Lankford Grill, Bubba’s Texas Burger Shack, and Stanton’s City Bites. It’s also no coincidence that each of these venues all trade in exceptional beef stack assembly, sharing a like-minded ethos of “more is more” with regards to both patty size (no smashburgers to be found at these spots) and generosity of toppings.

So let’s get to it. The Champ burger was, at the risk of overstating things, about as hedonistically thrilling a consumptive experience as one can hope to attain. Everything about this sandwich screams love, deliciousness, indulgence, excess, and yet still care and attentiveness. The patties are expertly seasoned and the 81/19 Chuck beef blend is melt-in-your-mouth exquisite (do yourself a favor and get the double, you won’t be sad that you did), the cheese perfectly gooey, and the toppings — oh, the toppings! — elevated the entire composition to an ethereal level.

Often when one orders bacon on a burger, you’ll get one slice — maybe two if you’re lucky — that isn’t cohesively synthesized into the sandwich and frequently feel like an afterthought. Champ’s burgers are flooded with bacon, and it’s cooked to middle-ground soft-yet-chewy perfection. I added jalapeños to mine (because how can you not) and the sandwich also comes standard with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo, and you get heaping piles of everything. I’m not usually looking for tons of mayo but the burger was drenched in it, and it really worked; while my wrapper probably contained about 10 jalapeños that had to jump ship as I systematically devoured this monster beef delivery vehicle at my typical breakneck pace.

    8) Mean Burger

I wish Mean Burger weren’t so darn far. One of the highest-rated burgers anywhere in the Greater Houston area—with a 4.8 on on Google and 4.7on Yelp!—this humble Humble burger shop is about a 10-minute drive north of IAH, and is annihilating the traditional-sized burger game. My go-to the handful of times I’ve gone has been the Mean Bleu Cheese Burger, containing two extremely generously sized patties, bacon and bleu cheese, pickle, raw onion, pickled jalapeños, grilled jalapeños, grilled mushrooms, and thousand island dressing. No gimmicks, just straightforward burger deliciousness.

    7) JLB Eatery

Yes, another Katy fave! JLB is a tribute to burger hedonistic excess in the very best way possible. My favorite, The Crazy Burger, is an absolute monstrosity—two MASSIVE double certified Angus beef patties, double cheese, mayonnaise, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, bacon, grilled onions, and thousand island dressing. This thing is absolutely GARGANTUAN and it is probably close to a full day’s worth of calories. And worth every bite.

    6) Moon Tower Inn

Moon Tower’s The Grim Creeper is described as “two 1/4-lb Angus beef smash patties, chipotle pimento cheese, bacon, roasted poblano peppers, bnb jalapeños, crispy fried onion, hellstard(tm) & grimm sauce(tm) on a brioche bun. You will probably regret it.” Nope, zero regrets on this one! The beef is outrageously juicy and tender, and the perfect canvas to deliver some of the best heat I’ve had at any Houston burger shop. Whatever they’re putting in the hellstard and grimm sauce is a spicy lover’s delight, and truly addictive. I could not get enough of it and was deeply sad after my burger was finished. Previous Ranking: #8.

    5) Kowbell Burger

Kowbell hit the scene in late 2023 / early 2024, and this Katy Asian Town delight has been expertly slinging its out-of-this-world concoctions from the jump. While the regular menu offers a terrific range of flavorful options, similar to burger-chan, you can also customize to your heart’s content, and making modifications to already-delicious hamburgers is almost as enjoyable as consuming them.

During my last visit I ordered a custom signature tri-blend patty, blue cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, vital farms egg, smoked bacon, roasted kimchee, soy-pickled jalapeños, and Akma sauce burger, and am still thinking about it months later.

    4) Old School Burger

Among the most unassuming burger spots in the greater Houston area, this Katy gem is nestled in a random retail center on Mason Road south of I-10, and has been among my favorites since first enjoying its mouthwatering hamburgers in 2023. The fact that it remains this highly ranked despite having since consumed dozens of excellent burgers since then should tell you everything you need to know about the quality of Old School’s burger-slinging expertise. I do not know what their blend or seasoning is, but the preparation is nothing short of marvelous—some of the juiciest, most melt-in-your-mouth beef you’ll find anywhere. Every time I go I always think to myself I’ll try one of their many options, and yet I can never not order the Blue Star Burger—literally the very best blue cheese burger I’ve ever had.

    3) Narwhal Jousting Club

Narwhal debuted one year ago and landed at #7 on my Best New Burgers in Houston of 2025 list. And so when they posted that they were now offering a spicy version of their classic, a return visit became mandatory. Narwhal’s brilliance is in its simplicity—which I know sounds hilarious coming from someone who frequently stacks his burgers with every topping available, but sometimes I just want a classic, no-frills burger. I made mine a triple, and it comes standard with onions, copious amounts of gooey American cheese, and pickles. The Spicy sauce took an already delicious burger to another level—however, the off-menu EXTRA Spicy sauce is truly where it’s at, and what I will be modifying my burger with next go-round at Narwhal. Talk about not only hanging with the Grim Creeper, but potentially giving it a run for its money!

Narwhal has truly established itself as Burger Royalty, and as such they have elevated to their rightful place among the top three in the entire city.

    2) Clutch City

My #1 new burger to me for 2024, Clutch moved up on this list from #4 overall last summer to second-best in town! It also made some tangible adjustments to its burger-slinging—during its last appearance, owner Omar was still leaning in to the more traditional smash, but last fall, he intentionally evolved the patties to a larger format he dubs “Texas-style” or “Texas-sized” smashes. The end result is still insanely delicious, but the shift in patty size places Clutch firmly in Classic territory for me over a traditional Smash.

Clutch’s excellence begins well before beef hits grill: Halal beef with a simple BBQ rub consisting of cumin, salt, pepper and either paprika or cayenne, and the out-of-this-world clutch sauce, comprised of cajun hot sauce, sweet pickle juice, pepper, mayo, mustard, and pureed onion.

Additionally, props to Clutch for also adding an elite Spicy version of its Double Clutch to the menu—a most worthy contender for Houston Spicy Burger Supremity that can hang with Moon Tower’s Grim Creeper (the GOAT Spicy Burger).

    1) burger-chan

Some might feel more strongly about including burger-chan in the smash category. Yes, burger-chan can absolutely smash with the best of them, but—and I think folks that have enjoyed their beef would agree—their smashed patties are not smashed to within an inch of their lives.

Plus they also offer “regular”-sized options, and I am aiming to keep the smashburger list to places that make the smash a core part of their identity.

Lastly, burger-chan offers a ridiculous level of customization—which has always been my favorite thing about them—but as mentioned in the preamble, I don’t think smashes need to have 8 billion toppings, and so I feel good about categorizing burger-chan in the “classic” category.

Even founder Chef Willet Feng agrees. During a recent text exchange, I asked him how he felt about my categorization for burger-chan: “I actually never thought of ourselves as a smash burger per se, even though that’s how we cook the patties.”

With that out of the way, my #1 burger joint of 2023 and #1 from the July 2025 Power Rankings continues to maintain its lofty perch overlooking everyone else in an incredibly talented and busy Houston burger field.

There’s still no comparison for the seemingly limitless custom combinations fans can concoct when eating at burger-chan, though the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink topping offering would mean nothing if the beef and ingredients weren’t exceptional, which—of course they are. burger-chan’s blend of 44 Farms ground beef and their umami glaze—browned butter, soy, pureed shiitake mushroom, roasted garlic and Worcestershire—ensures this spectacular meat delivery vehicle thoroughly delights (and can still even surprise!) each and every time.

    Houston’s Top 20 Smashburgers

    20) HopDoddy

The Austin-founded chain has proven consistently reliable over the years, and at the risk of a backhanded compliment, I was overwhelmingly surprised by how much I enjoyed their Double Wagyu (for me, Triple) Smash, stacked with American cheese, shaved onions, pickled jalapeños, & HD secret sauce. A legit smashburger, that.

    19) Proper Burger

Located in Finn Hall on the first floor of Jones on Main in Downtown, Proper features some of the juicier smashburger I’ve had in Houston. The delivery vehicle for the Blue Cheese & Bacon Burger is fairly straightforward: two 2.5-ounce patties on a potato bun and the eponymous toppings, but the attention to detail and execution are are what elevates Proper to another level: smoked romaine lettuce and A1 Bone Marrow Sauce substantially enhance the overall flavor profile, while the beef—an 80/20 brisket and chuck blend—was exquisitely seasoned and cooked to perfection, dripping with juice and featuring beautiful char ringing the perimeter.

    18) BuffBurger

I’d known about BuffBurger for a minute but had made a mental note of thinking they were a chain (not that that is an immediate disqualifier, but I can’t say chains get me as revved up as outstanding one-off locations). Turns out they used to have muliple locations, but appear to be down to just one, and now after finally trying them I am wishing they DID have more stores. This was an excellent Triple Smash, with jalapeños and pickles, delivered on a tasty bun to boot.

    17) Lone Star Market

I’ll grant you that this photo makes the burger look like a mess, but flavor-wise it was anything but. This little gas station mini market is flipping some of the tastier patties around. I ordered their TX Double Stack, and added lettuce, cheese, egg, pickles, mushrooms , jalapeños, onions, mayo, tomato, and bacon. I have to say—I’ve missed mushrooms on my burger. Not many places offer them these days.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but there was something really familiar about the composition and taste of this burger concoction. The egg reminded me of the fluffiness I enjoyed from Stacked Burger, while the overall flavor profile of the beef and cheese reminded me a bit of some of the classic old school joints everyone loves—Stanton’s and Lankford—meshed with the newer school excellence of Narwhal Jousting Club.

Don’t misunderstand—I don’t know that this burger tasted specifically like any one of those three. But there were aspects within my consumptive experience that harkened back to specific things I’ve enjoyed about each of those burger experiences. And with each rating at a 4.5 or higher, that means Lone Star Market’s burger is in good company, and worth going out of your way on south 45 for.

    16) Stack Burger

Stack Burger might be the most unassuming smashburger spot on this list. Its straightforward burger sandwich is mostly no-frills, featuring the basics of lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayo, and cheese. Customization options are sparse limited to an egg and bacon—but with a strong focus on the beef, you can see how it works.

The composition of the sandwich is comfortable, kind of like putting on an old sweater or the nostalgic analogy of your choice. And I really enjoyed the eggs—I’m not sure I’ve ever been served a burger with what appeared to be scrambled eggs instead of sunny-side-up or over-easy, and the texture and thickness really rounded each bite out with a little something extra.

    15) Crypto Burger

I initially sampled Crypto Burger in February 2024 on the heels of irresistible social media hype, but came away somewhat disappointed. It could’ve been me—I ordered the Bull Run, enticed by the assortment of heat adjuncts laden within the composition, but the overall experience felt a bit lackluster.

Clearly I wasn’t racing to get back, but with 2025 being the year where I finally and truly fell head-over-heels for the smashburger — again, I’ve never not liked smashes, but I always considered myself a traditional “regular”-sized patty aficionado. I of course still and always will adore a “normal” burger, but the number of outrageously great smashes I’ve sampled during the past year has dramatically increased my desire to consume them — the time was right for Crypto Take 2.

This time I knew I had to try the number-one seller on their menu: The Bunqua Burger, smashed-style. The Double Bunqua Smash comes with 100% Halal patties, jalapeños, fried onions, FOMO sauce, cayenne pepper hot sauce, and pepperjack cheese.

It ended up being the right call—the flavors in the Bunqua Smash came together in a way I’ve never quite experienced before, with a pleasant (but not overwhelming) amount of heat, solid char on the burgers, and that addition of an unnamed herb — I think it may have been thyme — syncing up nicely.

    14) OMG! Burger

It took me a minute to check OMG! out—I really need to get over my misplaced notion that places with multiple locations are somehow lesser than—and when I finally did I was served up a near-textbook perfect smashburger redolent with juiciness and packed with flavor. A return visit is mandatory.

    13) Burger Bodega

Burger Bodega brings dynamite flavors, and the overall ambience elevates the entire experience—though admittedly dressing your restaurant up like a bodega is catnip to this New York City native. Another spot I need to revisit, but its tastiness has held up well enough in my memory to have it inside the Top 15.

    12) Boo’s Burgers

The long-awaited pop-up maestro finally opened up his first brick-and-mortar on the Esplanade in EaDo in summer 2025, and I have to say—it was very much worth the wait. Outstandingly delicious 44 Farms beef patties—notably, my buddy Chris remarked that Boo’s was another example of the “in-between” smash we’ve been seeing at a few spots; not quite a full-blown patty, but not as thin as one would expect from a traditional smash—and a uniformly excellent top-to-bottom beef delivery vehicle.

    11) Mad Burgers and Dogs

With its focus seemingly more on hot dogs, here’s a spot with an outstanding burger that you wouldn’t expect would have an excellent burger: the Triple Smash from Mad Dogs at the Conservatory Galleria is low-key outrageously great (look at that photo!). I added bacon and japalenos, but the beef was super juicy and tender and cooked to smashed perfection. It’s a bit mind-blowing that the Conservatory is home to literally two of the best burger-slingers in all of Houston (alongside Clutch City). And the fact that a place primarily specializing in hot dogs has a burger this good is crazy.

    10) Fuego’s Hot Chicken

What the heck is a hot chicken food truck doing on a list of best smashburgers in town, you are likely asking yourself? Well—Fuego’s Hot Chicken food truck began offering a Wagyu Double Smash recently, and it turns out that it’s absolutely delicious! I mean, look at that photo! This is quite the compliment, but the way the beef is cooked and overall unencumbered construction of the burger reminded me a LOT of Wagyuru. And their delicious, tangy sauce has a bit more zip to it as well! BUT the most bonkers thing of all is that Fuego’s’ outstandingly executed Wagyu Double Smash ONLY COSTS $5. Can’t say I had “hot chicken food truck makes one of the best (and least expensive) smashburgers in town” on my bingo card.

    9) Juicy Joint

I originally tried Juicy Joint via its Galleria food truck in the Fall of 2024 and found myself underwhelmed, and the burger generally lacking in flavor. However, a second visit to its Katy-based truck this past February was a game-changer, and packed a flavor blast of a punch. I absolutely inhaled this Jalapeno Groove Sizzler Triple Smash, and think about it often. The sauce is a game-changer.

    8) Smashed Society

This food truck up in Montgomery blew me away in summer 2025. I ordered the Triple Smash with bacon, egg, and chopped peppers, and this thing absolutely slapped. Juicy goodness, and charred smash excellence. Exceptional seasoning and cook on the beef. The only downside is that, while I am periodically up in the Conroe area, Smashed Society is way too far from my usual stomping grounds for me to be able to partake in its carnal delights with any consistency.

    7) Chef & Rancher / Charolais

Chef Austin Simmons’ highly coveted Double Wagyu Smash was almost certainly the hardest burger to acquire on this list, given its sporadic availability during Chef & Rancher weekend pop-ups at an H-E-B in Creekside Park (for those unfamiliar with Houston geography, this is not exactly close to where I live in Katy) last winter. But oh my was it worth my timing finally aligning to successfully chase it down.

It is not often that I am rendered speechless, but my goodness. The beef is utterly and truly the star of the show here—though Chef Simmons’ signature kimchee aioli is indeed as mouthwatering as it looks, and adds an absolutely sublime level of heat to the proceedings—with a richness and depth of flavor wonderfully coaxed through its perfect cook and thoughtful seasoning.

One presumes that the Double Wagyu Smash will be front-and-center as Simmons flings the doors open on his forthcoming Woodlands-area restaurant Charolais, which—given my love for this thing, will probably mean breaking my “no restaurants on the list” rule from the preamble.

    6) Gastrocraft

My #1 New-to-Me Burger in Houston for 2025, Dennis Feray’s ode to the smash is essentially perfect. I enjoyed the 1-Star Double Smash, which comes with two smashed all-beef patties, American cheese, grilled sweet onions, and burger sauce on a toasted brioche bun. I also added a third patty, because triple cheeseburgers are life, and of course, jalapeños. Dennis’ beef is a unique 73/27, seasoned with cayenne and paprika (among a few other spices), and his delicious burger sauce is mayo-based with ketchup, mustard, sriracha, black pepper, and pickle juice—coming together in perfect harmony and resulting in a spice-forward beef hedonist’s dream come true! The only thing keeping Gastro from ranking higher on the list is that the truck only ever sets up shop in the far northeast (typically in Humble or Kingwood)—quite the distance from my typical stomping grounds. If Dennis ever makes a play for the west side of town, watch out, everyone!

    5) Burgerhouse

Burgerhouse is bit of a dark horse on the list, if only because there continues to be virtually zero hype or discussion about it in any of the corners of the internet I inhabit—not to mention the two times I’ve gone I was literally the only person in the entire place. With that, I’m happy to report that it is well worth the ~30-minute ride from Uptown.

I ordered their Classic Burger with three patties—as you know, triple cheeseburgers are life—which comes standard with American cheese, pickles, grilled onions, and Burgerhouse sauce. I added jalapeños because I can’t not do that whenever they’re available, and bacon.

Just when you think you’ve seen and tasted it all, Burgerhouse manages to come through with a legit Top 5 smashburger in town—the beef in particular was enjoyably seasoned, and the main reason to return would be the expert-level char on the edges—that I would agree is worthy of its 4.5 on Yelp.

    4) Smash City

Smash City’s Jalapeño Jackpot—which comes with two smashed Angus patties, melted American cheese, grilled jalapeños, smoky beef bacon, signature sauce, and grilled diced onions, on a very tasty potato bun branded with their logo—has quickly become one of my favorites burgers in all of Houston.

I am well aware that Wagyu is all the rage (and rightly so!), but these classic Angus patties sing all the savory beefy flavor notes I could want. Additionally, sometimes my abundant topping selections can overwhelm the flavor of the beef, but everything was perfectly in sync here. Just delicious, well-prepared and thoughtfully cooked on the execution.

Those that have broken bread with me know I am the fastest eater around, so my consuming something quickly isn’t necessarily notable in and of itself—but every time I order it I literally inhale the thing, and given its generous proportions, that’s among the highest compliments I can pay a burger.

    3) Bad Buns

This represents the single biggest jump of anyone on either list.

I had Bad Buns just outside of my Top 30 Hamburgers in Houston from last summer, in the “On the Bubble” section, and boy was I off on that.

A recent return visit confirmed what I started to feel when I first scoped it out nearly a year ago: not only are they are ready for prime time, but the cook and char on their world-class smashes can hang with the very best in Houston.

Simplicity is the operative word here, with smashes available in single, double, and triple form, with only a handful of modifiers available. Obviously jalapenos were added, but I don’t even know that they were necessary. As you can see in the photo, the smash on these patties is perfection, and I’m still thinking about the melding of the cheese and beef. A most worthy entrant in the Top 3.

    2) Hotline Burger

I may have Hotline as my #2 smashburger joint in Houston, but I wouldn’t argue against it for the top slot!

My go-to order is the Jalapeño Burger, which comes with two crispy 100% halal beef patties, ranch sauce, fresh jalapeños, swiss cheese and pickles. I added a third patty—because the only thing better than a double smashburger is a triple—jalapeño relish, grilled onions, and bacon. Something about the specificity of my order tipped owner Philip Kim off to prompt him to thoughtfully give me a container of the even-spicier version of Hotline’s sauce, which, please and thank you.

Phillip’s take on the smashburger is outstandingly delicious, and almost belongs in its own category of excellence. The beef was seasoned and cooked to beyond perfection, and the amalgamation of toppings and methodical integration of meat and veggies elevated the experience to a savory and indulgent euphoric nirvana.

    1) Wagyuru

Houston’s current GOAT smash. Wagyuru has had a heck of a year since launching its limited double smash program (only available on Saturdays and Sundays) last spring, as these purveyors of world-class beef nailed the simple-yet-delicious category with their no-frills Wagyu Double Smash.

This isn’t just any Wagyu. Owner Anthony’s family owns two farms within 100 miles of the city, ensuring a level of freshness few others can offer, and he says that most places that offer Wagyu are really offering a product that’s part-Wagyu, part-Angus. Wagyuru very proudly only serves 100% Wagyu beef that it raises on its own — I’m not aware of anyone else in the Houston beef game that can make the same claim.

And wow, does it ever impress. The construction is no frills, featuring two 3-oz smashed 100% Wagyu patties, cheddar, caramelized onions, and pickles on a potato bun, seasoned with Cookin With Swiss’ Ranch House Beef Rub. The secret sauce is a combo of mayo, mustard, ketchup, worchestershire and other proprietary spices, and is excellent in its own right. And the beef itself—Wagyuru’s 80/20 is among the juiciest, most tender beef I’ve ever had. The type that melts in your mouth and goes down so quickly that you’ve inhaled the sandwich before even realizing it’s gone.

Immediately after I originally consumed this treat in summer 2025 I alerted Houston Chronicle food critic Bao Ong to its gloriousness, and he subsequently experienced its greatness for himself and then went on to write an entire feature about owner Anthony and his crew. The establishment would also make the Chron’s frequently updated list of Best Burgers in Houston. Well-deserved for this deliciousness, indeed.

    Houston’s Top 8 Restaurant Burgers

    8) Loro (photo by restaurant)

Haven’t been back to Loro for a few years now, but I still remember thinking it was exceptionsal

    7) Nancy’s Hustle (photo by restaurant)

Grateful to have had the Nancy Burger a few times now, and there’s a reason why it’s routinely on just about everyone’s Best Houston Burgers lists. Look at that thing.

    6) Squable (photo by restaurant)

Another I am overdue for a return visit to, and so the burger is not as cemented in my mind as many of my other favorites, but this photo (not mine) reminds me that I truly loved it when I did first try it back in 2021.

    5) Ember & Greens (photo by restaurant)

Perhaps something of dark horse candidate considering most of the other names I have selected are rather well-known, but this Hedwig Village-area establishment right off of I-10 knows what it’s doing with its Wagyu double smash.

    4) Butcher’s Grill

A signature item at The Butcher’s Grille, their burger consists of a flame-grilled 1/2 lb halal patty with American cheese, beef bacon, onion ring, tomato, lettuce, pickles, mayo, and sriracha, and is well-representative of the restaurant’s Lebanese-meets-American flavors. Delicious and a great choice if you are in Uptown Houston!

    3) Fusion

Fusion Grill, on South Mason Rd, might be the best restaurant in Katy. It certainly has the most flavorful restaurant-style burgers in the area, and plenty of different burger offerings to satisfy almost all flavor preferences.

Their Texas Burger is 8 ounces of Angus beef topped with BBQ pulled brisket, American cheese, crispy bacon, grilled jalapeños pickled onions and chipotle sauce.

The family and I have enjoyed Fusion frequently over the last few years and it has become a go-to for restaurant burgers locally. The only thing I would change is their buns, which are enormous. I appreciate that the compositions themselves are substantive and require a hefty platform, but in this burger lover’s opinion, the bun comprises way too much of the sandwich.

And the other item I’d love to see them add is—natch—a smashburger option.

    2) Rainbow Lodge

Rainbow Lodge is a Houston institution with nearly 50 years of serving the city. I became aware of their mouth-watering burger when I first began compiling my ratings / to-do list several years ago, and after the Houston Chronicle named it one of its Top 18 Burgers in Houston in November 2024, I knew I needed to finally give it a shot.

In some regards it almost feels like this was put on a tee for me—a restaurant that only sells its burger during one meal service a week, on Fridays at lunchtime? A match made in heaven for a Friday Burger Adventure™️.

The official name of the sandwich is Wild Game Burger Friday, where the star of the show is a delicious blend of elk, bison and ribeye. While anticipation was already high heading into the proceedings, I am delighted to say that Rainbow Lodge wildly exceeded my expectations.

For starters, I can’t say I’ve ever had a patty blend containing these three ingredients—a truly savory and exceptional meat-consuming experience. But that was only the start. The burger comes standard with a chef-inspired topping each week—today it was pimento and pepper jack cheese—and smoked creole mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions.

What they don’t tell you on the menu is that you can add a slew of extra toppings, which for this burger-stacking obsessive absolutely made my day. A fried egg, bacon, and fresh jalapeños immediately entered the equation, and lo and behold, I found myself staring down a behemoth akin to the meat towers I make at home.

As I’ve now mentioned countless times over, for burgers I prefer spots that specifically specialize in just burgers—and so my burger-consuming frequency at “regular” establishments that also have a notable burger isn’t as robust as at burger specialty joints—but I have to say, Rainbow Lodge’s Wild Game Burger Friday might be the best restaurant burger in town. At least, it’s close, because at #1 we have…

    1) Toasted Coconut

Look, I’d been hearing about Toasted Coconut’s greatness for quite some time. I first started tracking the various food tastemakers’ Best Burgers lists (Houston Chronicle, CultureMap, Eater, The Infatuation) back in 2023, and it has had staying power, frequently recurring on multiple best-burger round-ups.

The burger comes standard with two beef patties, American cheese, chili aioli, pickles, red onions, and Hawaiian buns.

Me being me, I of course added a third patty, a farm egg, bacon jam, and pickled jalapeños, with their signature thicc bacon on the side.

This burger is truly a hedonistic delight, with every ingredient lovingly prepared from scratch (even the bun!). It’s so good it made me return to this list and update it to include this new Best Restaurant Burger section just so I could give this beast the props it deserves.

And there you have it! Let me know in the comments or via email if I’m missing your favorite! I am forever on the hunt for the next great burger.

Houston’s two best new smashburgers are made by establishments that don’t even specialize in ground beef

Revisiting several old faves and (always) trying new spots during the first three months of 2026

My apologies for being MIA since my year-end lists. I’m still discovering and eating new burgers, but I’ve found myself also gravitating toward revisiting old faves, and so I haven’t felt as compelled to publish full-blown write-ups of my most recent beef-pursuit exploits.

With that, I thought it might be fun to at least collect and summarize some of my food highlights since the beginning of 2026.

This is the Japaneno Jackpot from Smash City, which was my #8 new burger of 2025, and whenever I redo my Overall Houston Burger Power Rankings, might end up even higher. Truly a hedonistically carnal beef experience.

OMG what’s a pizza doing here? Well friends, my greatest discovery of the first quarter of 2026 was indeed not a burger, but rather the very best pizza in Houston, served up by Talespin. Talespin launched to a good bit of hype and fanfare last year, making a name for themselves as purveyors of a new “Neotexican” style of pizza making, and holy heck my only complaint is that I didn’t try their delicious dough sooner. Pictured here is the first if three Talespin pizzas, this one is the B2P2, featuring Oak Smoked Brisket, Candied Bacon, Roasted Jalapeno Popper Cream Cheese, Cojita, Caramelized Onions, Pickled Jalapenos, Scallions, Toasted breadcrumbs, Really Good Ranch. Naturally I added Cupped Pepperoni like a savage.

Another banger from Talespin, this is their TX Steakhouse Burger pizza, with Herford Beef, Smoked Tomato-Balsimic Jam, Cheddar, House Pickles, Carmelized Onions, Candied Bacon, Jalapeno Fancy Sauce, Chives & Smoked Salt. So, kind of a burger! :)

Third and final beast from Talespin is the Coffee Cowboy, replete with 100% Halal Coffee-Crusted Hereford Flank Steak, Smoked Onion Bianco Sauce, Mozz, White Cheddar, Caramelized Onion, Truffled Arugula. Hard to pick a fave out of the three meat-dominant pies they offer.

This here’s Narwhal Jousting Club’s Spicy Triple Burger. Narwhal was #7 on my 2025 Top Burger list, and also has a chance for even more greatness after releasing this brilliantly spicy take on their already-classic burger.

For my birthday in February I had to kick it old school. Specifically at Old School Burger, with its Blue Star Burger — one of my favorite burgers in the entire Greater Houston area.

This was an excellent Triple Smash, with jalapenos and pickles, delivered on a tasty bun to boot.

Not a burger or a pizza! But rather a super-badass charcuterie board we put together for the Super Bowl.

Also for Super Bowl, my son and I decided to pre-purchase patties from Wagyuru with the toppings separate, so that we could assemble and reheat in time for the game. While the burger in this photo doesn’t look as beautiful as their burgers do in-person, I can assure you the flavor was insanely delicious and a joy to be able to consume at home.

I originally tried Juicy Joint via its Galleria food truck in the Fall of 2024 and found myself underwhelmed, and the burger generally lacking in flavor. However, a second visit to its Katy truck this past February was a game-changer, and packed a flavor blast of a punch. I absolutely inhaled this Jalapeno Groove Sizzler Triple Smash. My hope now is that the Galleria truck is able to replicate this level of tastiness.

This is shake Shack’s K-Shack BBQ Triple Smash. I really wanted to like this — I enjoy the SmokeShack quite a bit — but sadly it was pretty flavorless.

Another birthday weekend burger, and I couldn’t not consume THE GOAT burger-chan during my Friday Burger Adventure celebration.

The Texan Burger from Fusion Grill, Katy’s premier burger restaurant. Fusion’s burgers are quite good; the one thing that keeps me from having them as among the best of the best in my mind are the absolutely massive buns they use. I’d also love to see them introduce a smash option at some point.

Another revisit of a place that made my 2025 Top 20 — Burgerhouse checked in at #13, and honestly? Probably could’ve been higher. Hopefully this place is crowded at odd hours because the two times I visited at lunchtime it was a ghost town. Really, truly outstanding take on the smash though — look at that char!

OK now we’re getting into the best of the best. And the crazy part is, my two favorite burgers of the first three months of 2026 are not from spots that even specialize in burgers! Fuego’s Hot Chicken food truck began offering a Wagyu Double Smash recently, and it’s close enough to the office and the photos and videos looked legit to the point that I figured what the heck. And lo and behold — Fuego’s makes an absolutely delicious smashburger! Can’t say I had “hot chicken food truck makes one of the best smashburgers in town” on my bingo card.

This was a recent homemade attempt at a smashburger, and honestly? It was pretty damn good. I’m my own worst critic, and there are definitely a few things I’d do differently, but this homage to Wagyuru — I used Wagyuru beef plus their house seasoning, along with American cheese (first time ever!), pickles, potato bun (and added jalapenos) — really hit the spot.

Another revisit — had to run back the Clutch City Spicy Burger, which recently became a permanent menu item.

This is the Suya Spice Triple Smashburger from newcomer SmashdogHTX, which operates out of Blodgett Food Hall in EaDo alongside a ton of other virtual brands. I was excited to try their unique take on the smash, as they bill themselves as bringing a West African kick. Unfortunately I didn’t taste any spice (maybe they forgot?) and for a triple this thing was tiny and basically tasted like a snack. The execution overall wasn’t bad — really noce char, and the patties were seasoned and cooked nicely — but overall there just wasn’t a ton of flavor.

The second major surprise on this wrap-up — another spot with an outstanding burger that you wouldn’t expect would have an excellent burger: the Triple Smash from Mad Dogs at the Conservatory Galleria. I added bacon and japalenos, but the beef was super juicy and tender and cooked to smashed perfection. Honestly the burger is kind of hidden on their menu — perhaps out of deference to Clutch City, which also occupies space in the same food hall — but it is too good to pass up. It’s a bit mind-blowing that the Conservatory is home to literally two of the best burger-slingers in all of Houston. And the fact that a place primarily specializing in hot dogs has a burger this good is crazy. I see you Fuego’s and Mad Dogs, casually knocking elite smashburgers out on the side — wild to think what they would do with a full menu of beef offerings.

  • My Top Burgers of 2025

    My Top Burgers of 2025

The bar for outrageously delicious beef concoction excellence continues to soar in the Best Burger City in America

Welcome to my third annual installment of My Favorite New Burgers I Consumed In Any Given Year! Here are the last two years’ worth of Top Houston Burgers—2024 and 2023—along with my most recent version of The Top 30 Burgers in Houston, which was published last summer. I will likely update those Power Rankings sooner rather than later.

For those new to this, I am absolutely and utterly obsessed with hamburgers to the point that I would probably eat them daily if it was (a) socially acceptable, and (b) not a horrendous dietary decision.

I have spent a lot of time these past few years driving all over the Greater Houston area in search of the finest meat delivery vehicles our town has to offer, and frequently chronicle my thoughts in my Friday Burger Adventure™️ write-ups. I also maintain a massive spreadsheet in my attempt to aggregate the ratings of every place that offers a notable burger in the Greater Houston Area.

Somehow in 2023 my list was only 5 burgers long. Last year it expanded to seven. 2025 proved to be a ridiculous year for lovers of deliciously prepared beef delivery vehicles, as I am highlighting 20 worthy spots this go-round! I’ve said it a few times now, but the sheer volume of absurdly great hamburgers that already exist in this town—not to mention the continued proliferation of excellent newcomers—has me convinced that Houston is The #1 City for Hamburgers in the entire country. Prove me wrong.

The List! 2025’s Best Hamburgers in Houston

My criteria is that the burger has to be from an establishment I hadn’t previously visited prior to this year, but not necessarily from a place that opened in 2025 (though there are a fair amount of new-to-Houston spots on this year’s write-up!). This enables my Burgers of the Year list to be comprised of entirely new destinations (to me) and also means that burgers that have appeared in my round-ups from years past aren’t eligible (which is why I’ll do an updated Power Rankings at some point).

    1. U.S.A. Burger – Double Cheeseburger

I enjoyed the juicy Double Cheeseburger at newcomer U.S.A. Burger on Kirkwood in the Westchase District this past summer. The beef was cooked and seasoned quite nicely, and the bun was also a stand out. All of the ingredients are there for a potentially elevated experience, though I’d love to see them coax just a tad more flavor from the toppings.

    1. Embers & Greens – Wagyu Smash

Featuring Akaushi beef, caramelized onions, arugula, tomato, pickles, homemade sauce, and served with Parmesan truffle fries—and the addition of a runny egg and bacon, natch—I thoroughly enjoyed this Spring Branch restaurant’s elevated take on the smash.

    1. Rainbow Lodge – Wild Game Burger

Rainbow Lodge is a Houston institution with nearly 50 years of serving the city. I became aware of their mouth-watering burger when I first began compiling my ratings / to-do list years ago, and after the Houston Chronicle named it one of its Top 18 Burgers in Houston in November 2024, I knew I needed to finally give it a shot.

I generally favor spots that specifically specialize in just burgers during the majority of my Houston Burger Exploits, and so my burger-consuming frequency at “regular” establishments that also have a notable burger isn’t as robust as at burger specialty joints, but I have to say—Rainbow Lodge’s Wild Game Burger Friday might be the best restaurant burger in town (as a reminder, I categorize my burger reviews in several buckets: Hamburger Joints, Smashburger Places, Restaurant with a Notable Burger, and Food Trucks).

    1. Lone Star Market – TX Double Stack

I’ll grant you that this photo makes the burger look like a mess, but flavor-wise it was anything but. This was put on my radar a while back by Houston food influencer thehtxhost and it had been in the back of my mind to try, though it being so far east at the intersection of 45 and 610 kept me from jumping over there.

Turns out that was my mistake. This little gas station mini market is indeed flipping some of the tastier patties around.

    1. Bad Buns – Triple Smash

Bad Buns is among several relatively gimmick-free, focus-on-the-beef entrants on this list, and the char and juiciness of the Triple Halal Smashburger I enjoyed this past spring is worthy of any smash lover’s attention. Near the top of my list for a return visit to 👌

    1. Proper – A Burger Spot – Blue Cheese & Bacon Smash

Last spring, I was flattered and humbled to be asked to attend the soft opening of Proper – A Burger Spot, the new burger concept at Finn Hall in Downtown’s iconic art-deco masterpiece, Jones on Main (712 Main St).

Conceived of and launched by in-house Finn Hall chefs Joe Murphy, who was previously Executive Chef at Nobu Houston, Nobu Vegas, and Culinary Director of The Finn; and Michael Collantes, owner of Michelin-star-rated Soeseki Modern Omakase in Orlando, FL, Sushi Saint, and more; Proper boasts an extraordinary pedigree that naturally led to outsized expectations. And boy, did they deliver.

With smashburger purveyors in anything but short supply, it’s become increasingly challenging for a patty slinger to introduce a unique and delicious concept, and I’m thrilled to report that Chef Murphy and Chef Collantes have done just that.

The soft opening featured three options: The Proper Burger; Mushroom & Swiss; and Blue Cheese & Bacon. Longtime readers will recall that I am obsessed with the blue cheese & bacon combo, and it’s one you seldom—if ever—see among a sea of American Cheese-draped smashburgers throughout the scene.

The mere concept of indulging in a Blue Cheese & Bacon smash alone was enough to activate my salivary glands—truly, I’m hard-pressed to think of a single smashburger joint that offers one in regular rotation—but then I received this work of art and chomped down on it. And I was whisked away to a charred-tastic juicy nirvana.

The Blue Cheese & Bacon comes standard with two 2.5-ounce patties delivered on a potato bun, the aforementioned eponymous toppings, plus smoked romaine lettuce and A1 Bone Marrow Sauce. Fairly certain I’ve never had the latter before, and now I want it on everything.

The beef—an 80/20 brisket and chuck blend—was exquisitely seasoned and cooked to perfection, with beautiful char ringing the perimeter. If you like your smashburgers bursting with juicy flavor—a difficult feat considering a common critique of the very act of smashing would seem to diminish excessive succulence—Proper is your new go-to.

You just don’t find Bacon & Blue Cheese smashburgers on many menus, nor burgers crafted this expertly. There’s an elevated level of polish, sophistication and care in the ingredients, preparation, cooking and presentation that not many can match. Extremely, highly recommended.

    1. Burger Boss to Go – Meme Bacon Cheeseburger

The beef is absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked, and the overall oversized package and saporously indulgent flavor profile is reminiscent of old-school Houston burger faves ChampChunkBig Burger World (which I’m not entirely certain is still open — they appear to have moved from a physical location in Katy to a food truck, and last time I tried to order online they never appeared), and the pride-and-joy of Humble, Mean Burger.

At a 4.6 on Google and 4.7 on Yelp, you don’t need me to tell you Burger Boss is the real deal, but I’m gonna do it anyway: make a point of slotting this place in as your next burger escapade, and you will not be disappointed.

    1. Burgerhouse – Classic Triple Burger

A bit of a dark horse on the list, if only because there’s been virtually zero hype or discussion about it in any of the corners of the internet I inhabit. Candidly I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as I’d seen and heard virtually nothing about Burgerhouse—they haven’t posted to their Insta since July 2024!—but the completionist in me knew it was finally time to check it out this year.

And I have to say—I was glad I did! If my photo above didn’t already get your salivary glands going, I’m happy to report that this was well worth the 30-minute ride from Uptown.

I ordered their Classic Burger with three patties—as you know, triple cheeseburgers are life—which comes standard with American cheese, pickles, grilled onions, and Burgerhouse sauce. I added jalapeños because I can’t not do that whenever they’re available; bacon; and, somewhat oddly, lettuce and tomato were also add-ons.

Just when you think you’ve seen and tasted it all, Burgerhouse manages to come through with a very strong offering—the beef in particular was enjoyably seasoned, and the main reason to return would be the expert-level char on the edges—that I would agree is worthy of its 4.5 on Yelp.

    1. Boom Baam – Build a Stack

Boom Baam has the distinction of offering the most unique concoction among the many wonderful burgers on this list. Housed in a gas station near the intersection of Highway 6 and Westheimer—Houstonians are well aware that some of the city’s best food can often be found in unexpected locations—relative Houston newcomer Boom Baam hit my socials earlier this year with their tantalizing videos of delicious-looking burgers. I was thrilled to learn that upon trying the Build a Tower burger—comprised of double beef, cheese, lettuce, pickles, grilled jalapeños, onions, and Boom Baam sauce, plus beef links, bacon, egg, and avocado—it was most worthy of the 4.9 on Google and 4.7 on Yelp that places it in a tie for 6th-highest rated burger in all of Houston, per the massive spreadsheet I maintain of every burger I am aware of in Houston.

    1. Boo’s Burgers – OG Smash Burger

Following a stretch of intermittent pop-ups, the opening of a permanent location on the Esplanade for acclaimed chef Joseph Boudreaux’s Boo’s may have been the most highly-anticipated debut in the entire Houston hamburger scene this year. And it was very much worth the wait. Boo’s OG Smash Burger features two outstandingly delicious 44 Farms beef patties—notably, Boo’s is another example of the “in-between” smash I’ve seen at a few spots: not quite a full-blown patty, but not as thin as one would expect from a traditional smash—and a uniformly excellent top-to-bottom beef delivery vehicle. Toppings are restrained—burger sauce, cheese, tomato, onions, and pickles (I added bacon)—and the care and attention to the construction is much appreciated. Look at how lovingly this was prepared and presented!

    1. Lupo – Bleu’s Burger

I love blue cheese. Which means it will come as zero surprise whatsoever that I also love blue cheese hamburgers. Despite Houston’s best-in-the-country hamburger scene, there actually aren’t an overflowing amount of options locally when it comes to topping patties with my beloved choice of cheese.

Last year I convinced my great friends at burger-chan to test out a limited-run bleu cheese burger, and it was everything I’d hoped it would be.

As mentioned in this space earlier this fall, beloved Houston institution Bernie’s Burger Bus had my favorite blue cheese burger of all time—The Substitute—on its menu before its tragic shuttering in 2020.

When I initially visited Lupo Burger—the new burger concept from Justin Turner, the genius behind Bernie’s—in October, he teased that he might be reviving The Substitute before too long. Fast forward to a few weeks later, and there it was in his Instagram stories—the newly rechristened Bleu’s Burger—added to the menu at Lupo.

Like Bruce Wayne to the Bat Signal, I knew I had to once again make the trek out to Generation Park (I enjoy traveling for burgers that I know I’ll love, but even so—this is quite a hike from Katy).

Unsurprisingly, it was beyond worth it. Upon sinking my teeth in, my endorphins kicked into nostalgic overload as a triumphant and deeply satisfied grin plastered itself on my face. Bleu’s Burger is a near-note-perfect recreation of The Substitute, with its signature blend of its namesake cheese, bacon, onions and BBQ sauce. To this day I’ve yet to consume a burger that tastes precisely the way this one does.

I would eat this burger weekly if I could. Justin, I know we’ve talked about it many times now, but please find a way to make it back to Katy one of these days. We’ll make it worth your while.

    1. Chunk’s – Double Bam Burger

Chunk’s is another entry in what I would call the “no frills” category. Thankfully there are some quality customization options for the burgers themselves, but generally speaking what you see is what you get: from the no-nonsense exterior with the tiniest parking lot you’ve ever seen to a sparsely decorated cozy dining room, the experience of being physically inside of Chunk’s reminded me of Loaded BurgerHippo BurgersOld School Burger, and several others.

But you’re not here for decor evaluations. On to the burger—I ordered the Double Bam Burger, which comes with two patties, bacon, cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo, mustard, and is served on a generously sized bun. And I of course added jalapeños, because spice is life.

The name of the game at Chunk’s is juiciness! Right out of the gate upon unwrapping the sandwich, the entire concoction was dripping with juice! While Chunk’s doesn’t explicitly refer to its patties as smashed, I would call what they serve a hybrid — they weren’t quite as thin as a traditional smashburger, but they also weren’t enormous. In some regards they were the ideal size—with some smashburgers I still find myself famished even after a double, but this meat delivery vehicle did not need a third patty to slake my insatiable hunger for beef. The patties themselves were very flavorful and perfectly cooked, and the toppings all came to play—though the star of the show were the jalapeños; not sure the flavors would have come together for me in quite the same way without that extra kick.

In some regards the visual composition of the sandwich felt like a bit of a throwback and reminded me of Champ‘s wonderful burger—if Champ did thinner patties and was covered in juice. I also ordered the loaded chili fries (and also added jalapeños) and thoroughly enjoyed them.

    1. Smash City – Jalapeño Jackpot

Smash City delightfully hit my radar in ideal fashion: posts featuring the truck suddenly started appearing in my Instagram feed out of nowhere, touting the food truck’s forthcoming new brick-and-mortar location, on Westheimer in Uptown/Galleria. It literally could not have been better situated for me.

In some regards the marketing plan was eerily reminiscent of Juicy Joint’s entry to the market, with multiple videos from both the company and local food influencers hyping the brand spawning seemingly overnight, which is clearly the playbook for getting in front of your desired audience. It got my attention and I subsequently decided to eat there less than two weeks after learning about its existence, so the plan appears to have worked.

But enough with the preamble. You’re here to know what I thought about the burger.

I ordered the Jalapeño Jackpot, which comes with two smashed Angus patties, melted American cheese, grilled jalapeños, smoky beef bacon, signature sauce, and grilled diced onions, on a very tasty (and sturdy) potato bun branded with their logo. Noting the heft of the bun is important, because I also added a third patty (of course), an egg, bacon, truffle mayo, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and pickles, and oftentimes my custom burger towers overwhelm their foundation. I did find it slightly silly that the latter three fixings aren’t standard issue, but a minor quibble.

From the moment I sank my teeth into it to prevent the burger from toppling sideways—I recognize that I just lauded the bun, but trying to hold these overflowing beef towers up with one hand for the photo while sauces and hot juice are dripping down my hand is quite a bit more difficult than it looks—I knew I was in for something special.

I am well aware that Wagyu is all the rage (and rightly so), but these classic Angus patties sang all the savory beefy flavor notes I could want.

Sometimes my abundant topping selections can overwhelm the flavor of the beef, but everything was perfectly in sync here. Just delicious, well-prepared and thoughtfully cooked on the execution.

Those that have broken bread with me know I am the fastest eater around, so my consuming something quickly isn’t necessarily notable in and of itself—but I literally inhaled this thing, and given its generous proportions, that’s among the highest compliments I can pay a burger.

    1. Narwhal Jousting Club – Double Cheeseburger

Narwhal Jousting opened this past spring and quickly established a cult fanbase for its no-nonsense, straightforward, absurdly delicious burger offerings. They don’t even do cutesy names for their burgers. The beef is the star of the show here, and unlike many of my favorites from this year, Narwhal is no smashburger purveyor. These are real-deal, big boy, juicy patties packed with flavor. The only toppings are cheese, onions, pickles and Awesome Sauce. More of this, please!

    1. Moon Tower Inn – Grim Creeper

A little embarrassed it took me this long to get to the longtime Houston institution, but something about good things and those who wait, right?

One of the problems when you let data influence your decisions—I’d long heard the burgers were great, but a 4.0 on Yelp (though a solid 4.6 on Google) meant there were other places I ended up seeking out ahead of it. Also having previously been to Moon Tower (even sans food) put a mental note in my head of it not being super-new for me. But I digress. I rectified this particular void in my burger-loving existence, ordering up the Grim Creeper. Moon Tower describes the Grim Creeper as follows:

“Two 1/4-lb Angus beef smash patties, chipotle pimento cheese, bacon, roasted poblano peppers, bnb jalapeños, crispy fried onion, hellstard(tm) & grimm sauce(tm) on a brioche bun. You will probably regret it.”

First off, no way are these bad boys smashed. The patties were real-deal thick beef pucks—which, while I have found myself increasingly gravitating toward “true” smashes, I still love a big-boy patty when it comes to a ground beef delivery vehicle.

The beef was juicy and tender, and the perfect canvas to deliver some of the best heat I’ve had at any Houston burger shop. Whatever they’re putting in the hellstard and grimm sauce is a spicy lover’s delight, and truly addictive. I could not get enough of it and was deeply sad after my burger was finished. Reminiscent of Lankford’s Grim Burger in both name and flavor, though I have to say—the last time I had Lankford’s Grim, it didn’t hit anywhere near as hard as Moon Tower’s Grim Creeper.

There’s a new spicy champ in town.

    1. Q’s Deli – Triple Q Stack

This past summer, I went to Q’s Deli for the Triple Q Stack, featuring 73/27 beef, jalapeños, chopped onion, bacon, American cheese, and their signature delicious and spicy Q Sauce on a jalapeño cheddar bun. Easily one of the best burgers that I enjoyed in 2025.

    1. Wagyuru – Smashburger

Wagyuru had a heck of a year, huh? From launching its limited double smash program (only available on Saturdays and Sundays) last spring, to consistently selling out by summer, these purveyors of world-class beef nailed the simple-yet-delicious category with their no-frills Wagyu Double Smash. Immediately after I originally consumed this treat I alerted Houston Chronicle food critic Bao Ong to its gloriousness, and he subsequently experienced its greatness for himself and then went on to write an entire feature about owner Anthony and his crew. The establishment would also make the Chron’s frequently updated list of Best Burgers in Houston. Well-deserved for this deliciousness, indeed.

    1. Smashed Society (food truck) – Triple Smash

This food truck up in Montgomery blew me away this past summer.

    1. Chef & Rancher – Double Wagyu Smash

Chef Austin Simmons’ highly coveted Double Wagyu Smash was almost certainly the hardest burger to acquire on this list, given its sporadic availability during Chef & Rancher weekend pop-ups at an H-E-B in Spring (for those unfamiliar with Houston geography, this is not exactly close to where I live in Katy). But oh my was it worth my timing finally aligning to successfully chase it down. First and foremost, Chef Simmons and his wife are two of the kindest folks you could hope to meet, and were genuinely touched by my making the trip up north. I mean, check this out!

Meanwhile, the burger itself—it is not often that I am rendered speechless, but my goodness.

I first became aware of Chef Simmons after reading about his departure from Tris and subsequent launch of his pop-up series as he prepares to open his next venture, Charolais, due in 2026 up in The Woodlands. I have to imagine the burger will be prominently available full-time on that menu, but more importantly—Chef, please make a Katy location featuring your world-class beef a reality sooner rather than later 🙏

    1. Gastrocraft (food truck) – 1-Star Triple Smash

Gastrocraft has been slinging delicious comfort food since 2019, but it wasn’t until I began chronicling my burger adventures in earnest that I caught wind of Chef Dennis Feray’s smashburger, which is so visually appealing it should have its own IG account. And this is one smashburger that absolutely lives up to its mouth-watering appearance and then some.

The 1-Star Double Smash comes with two smashed all-beef patties, American cheese, grilled sweet onions, and burger sauce on a toasted brioche bun (an additional patty and jalapeños can—and should—be added when you order).

The beef is 73/27, and without knowing I guessed that it was seasoned with cayenne and paprika (among a few other spices), and was delighted to learn from Dennis that I was correct. Their patented burger sauce is mayo-based with ketchup, mustard, sriracha, black pepper, and pickle juice.

Let me tell you—this thing is a spice-forward beef hedonist’s dream come true! I’ve been loving dusting my own homemade patties with paprika and cayenne, and haven’t come across too many in the professional world with a similar heat-friendly mindset, so I was smitten from the get-go. Nor have I frequently encountered options with such a generous proportion of fat (how often do you see it in the 20s!). The heat from the spices was the perfect complement to the exceptionally expertly produced patties, cooked to charred precision and bursting with a saporous harmony of savoriness and umami magnificence.

Dennis has truly created an all-time singular Houston great with Gastrocraft’s smashburger—an offering that is among the most unique burger-consuming experiences I have had during this journey. The combination of spice, sauce and technical execution are beyond reproach, and the vast majority of Houston restaurants should be insanely jealous that they don’t offer this exquisite ode to beef consumption on their menus.

    Honorable Mention

Truthfully, any of these places are worthy of inclusion as being recognized among Houston’s top hamburgers in any given year; and I wanted to make sure I shone a spotlight on the places that were just outside my Top 20 but still brought me immense joy in 2025:

Brett’s BBQ (pictured above, and who also very sadly announced on December 9 that it would be closing its brick-and-mortar for good after December 28.

    Stack Burger

    OMG Burger (Katy)

    Feges BBQ

    Twisted Turban

    Johnny Good Burger

    Bussit Down Eatery

And there you have it! Let me know in the comments or on Instagram if I’m missing your favorite! I am forever on the search for the next great hamburger.

Achievement unlocked: All Houston smashburgers consumed

If you are a brick-and-mortar business that primarily specializes in smashburgers in Houston, I have most likely consumed your offering

When I originally set out to locate the very best burgers all over the Greater Houston area and chronicle my outings in my Friday Burger Adventures™️ series, I was not expecting that I’d be able to complete an entire category on my list anytime soon.

But, based on my research—and it’s entirely possible I may have missed a place; if I have, please let me know—following today’s journey, I believe I have now sampled smashburgers at every brick-and-mortar location in Houston that primarily specializes in the smashburger (these are both important distinctions, as there are seemingly a million food trucks out there, and to qualify for this category in addition to occupying a physical building the smashburger also needs to be your primary menu option).

To wit, here is the list I have of Houston-area smashburger places in non-mobile locations:

    • Wagyuru
    • Smash City
    • Hotline Burger
    • Johnny Good Burger
    • Clutch City Grill
    • Bamburger
    • Stack Burger
    • Burgerhouse
    • Bad Buns
    • Boo’s Burgers
    • Burger Bodega
    • Stuffed Belly
    • OMG! Burger
    • Trill Burger
    • Proper – A Burger Spot
    • Bun Slut

The spot I knocked off today to complete this cohort was Burgerhouse, up in Willowbrook.

Candidly I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as I’ve seen and heard virtually nothing about this place—they haven’t posted to their Insta since July 2024!—but the completionist in me knew it was finally time to check it out.

And I have to say — I was glad I did!

When Clutch City makes an off-menu habañero-inflected version of its legendary Clutch Burger just for you

Following my Clutch City revisit last month, I texted owner Omar Shaikh that I’d love to see an option for a spicier take on his near-perfect Clutch Burger.

Ask and ye shall receive, as Omar kindly agreed and asked if I would be willing to give this off-menu special a test drive.

What happens when you take the Clutch Burger—draped in its lettuce, tomato, onion and Clutch Sauce glory—and add the proprietor’s favorite (secret) hot sauce and grilled habañeros to the equation?

An even more indulgent flavor journey—one that will leave your taste buds asking you why you’ve been holding out on them when such gloriousness exists in the world.

The Spicy Clutch (Rocket Burger? If we’re continuing on the Houston theme…) immediately proved it can hang with some of the biggest heat-hurlers in the game (see Moon Tower’s Grim Creeper and Lankford’s Grim Burger), and needs to be added to Clutch City’s core offerings ASAP.

The Bernie’s renaissance continues at Lupo with the revival of The Substitute—one of the best Houston burgers ever made

Programming noteI’m starting to compile my annual write-up of my favorite new-to-me burgers of the year (here are my 2024 and 2023 honorees; plus my current Top 30 Power Rankings). If there’s a place you think I need to check out that you haven’t seen me write-up yet (either here or on my previous burger blog), don’t be shy! I love receiving recommendations, so drop ‘em in the comments or email me at my name at Gmail.

I love blue cheese. Which means it will come as zero surprise whatsoever that I also love blue cheese hamburgers.

  • Who’s the Boss?

    Who’s the Boss?

Northeast to-go stand’s no-frills aesthetic is the epitome of what makes Houston’s burger scene so special

Of the more than one-hundred burgers I’ve sampled during my Houston Burger Adventure Chronicles™️, Burger Boss to Go may be the truest encapsulation of why Houston is perhaps the most unique city for food in the country.

Humbly situated on Hirsch Road just north of 610 on the northeast side, this burger stand is slinging some of the tastiest beef concoctions in town through a to-go window and nothing else. No seating, barely even any parking, this is Houston at its most authentic — with delicious food lovingly being prepared and offered up in a relatively nondescript setting — and tastiest.

  • Bacon Blue Hellfire

    Bacon Blue Hellfire

Sampling limited edition burgers from Proper and Stuffed Belly; and a discussion on hamburger/smashburger specialty spots vs. the “restaurant hamburger” experience

Proper’s Blue Cheese Burger, which really didn’t have much Blue Cheese at all

Stuffed Belly’s Hellfire Burger, which packed a LOT of heat

While I don’t know that I’ll ever tire of trying something I haven’t previously had, during the last few weeks I’ve made a deliberate effort to return to burger joints I’ve already been to during my Friday Burger Adventures.

This is due in part to a desire to revisit places I adore (and others that perhaps didn’t wow me the first go-round but that I’ve been meaning to give a second chance) but also the fact that my “must-try” list has been thinning out.

Don’t get me wrong—there are still TONS of burgers in Houston I haven’t tried yet, but the number of exceptional (what I would generally consider 4.5 and above) hamburger / smashburger / food trucks I haven’t sampled is actually pretty small right now (while my spreadsheet does have many “restaurant with notable burger” entrants on it, I don’t find myself craving the restaurant burger experience the same way I do pursuing locations that primarily specialize in hamburger sandwiches, and so my desire to check those establishments off the list isn’t as compelling).

With that in mind, the 4.5 and higher (on Yelp) hamburger / smashburger / food trucks I’ve yet to try include:

    • Burger Boss to Go
    • Busta’s Burgers (multiple locations, though all are a bit further flung that I’d like)
    • O My Burger (Missouri City)
    • Superburgers (Magnolia)
    • Burgerhouse (Willowbrook)
    • Umbrella Fellas (I’m probably never getting here since they are Downtown and don’t open until like 6 p.m.)
    • Burger Truck 2020
    • Kabab Shako Mako (I’ve been meaning to try, but their online ordering website gives zero information about the contents of the burger; however; its presence on this 5 Must-Try Houston Halal Burgers Instagram post — of which I’ve had the other four — has kept it on my radar
    • Shawarma Hub (food truck that recently introduced a smashburger)
    • Kitchen Rumors’ Paratha Burger. This JUST dropped this past Sunday and so I don’t actually know what it’s rated but the hype is already out of control so it’s in my orbit. The Paratha Burger is only available on the restaurant’s happy hour menu which doesn’t start until 4:00 p.m., which will make my securing it a bit of a challenge since I intentionally limit my burger consumption to Fridays at lunchtime. We’ll see if I can make an exception.

If anyone has any experience with any of these and thinks it’s crazy that a burger fiend such as myself hasn’t tried it yet, please shoot me a note at the Musical Box Instagram account or larry dot koestler at gmail dot com.

Anyway, as for the two latest burgers I tried upon revisiting places I’d been —

Proper – A Burger Spot debuted at Finn Hall in Downtown this past March, and I immediately fell for its incredibly juicy take on the smash. One of my favorite burger experiences of the year; they recently checked in at #9 on My Top 30 Power Rankings list. With Proper introducing a limited-time Bacon Blue Cheese burgerone of my all-time favorite topping combos—the time was right for a revisit. Somewhat unfortunately, I can’t say I was wowed by their take on the Bacon Blue. The excessive juiciness from my original sampling was nowhere to found, and I also wasn’t wild about the sesame seed bun. Overall the flavor was muted, which is not something one typically says about blue cheese anything. Honestly, I struggled to even find the blue cheese on this thing. A bit of a miss for me, unfortunately.

I made my maiden voyage to Stuffed Belly back in April, and came away thinking that it was maybe a cut above McDonald’s, and nothing to write home about. Regardless, I was excited to see their announcement of the limited edition Hellfire Burger, just in time for spooky season.

First, the positives: this thing has legit heat! The Hellfire features Carolina Reaper cheese, a 4-chile sauce with habanero, arbol, Serrano, and ghost pepper, plus Sichuan chile oil, pickles, and pickled jalapeños. I would consider getting it again for the blast of fire alone. On the flip side, the burgers themselves remained underwhelming, with minimal-to-no flavor, and kind of a sad, slightly soggy construction overall.

While I don’t think Shake Shack is elite or anything, as a fast food-esque smashburger purveyor, I assume that is the level of quality that Stuffed Belly is going for, and they are still not there yet. Though the Shack does not have anything as hot as the Hellfire, so there’s that!

Overall, I still don’t have Stuffed Belly in My Top 30, and while I don’t love the idea of one unmemorable experience dragging an establishment I like down, I don’t know that I’ll be able to keep Proper at #9 on the Top 30 with such a middling showing the second time around. There are too many elite burger spots in Houston vying for the Top 10. Will be interesting to see how the list shakes out when I update it next (probably in a month or so).

Coming through in the Clutch, part II

My Top Burger of 2024—and #4 burger in all of Houston—continues to prove its otherworldliness

I’ve spilled a lot of digital ink on Clutch City Grill: first in my original gushing review in April 2024; then selecting it as my #1 new-to-me burger in all of Houston for 2024; and again this past summer anointing it as the #4 burger in H-Town in my inaugural Houston Burger Power Rankings list.

Despite the heaping praise, it’d been a hot minute since I’d gotten over to Clutch—my insatiable thirst for what I haven’t yet had continues to compel me, which unfortunately results in occasionally overlooking my faves in search of whatever’s new—and I knew I finally needed to rectify that.

And boy was I glad I did—with a triple smashburger, naturally. While the entire composition is exquisite, owner Omar Shaikh’s beef is truly the star of the show. There’s melt-in-your-mouth, and then there’s melt-in-your-mouth, and I’m hard-pressed to think of too many other Houston burgers that are this delicious and also barely require chewing—the beef is so soft it’s almost velvety. The only other spot that immediately springs to mind with beef like this is Q’s Deli.

The Clutch Burger comes standard with lettuce, tomato, onion and their signature clutch sauce, and I (naturally) added jalapeños. If I had to pick nits, I’m not sure the clutch sauce hit me quite as hard as it did that first time—still delicious, but the beef truly stole the show.

Oh, and you can’t have a conversation about clutch without a shoutout to the bun, an incredibly delicious sweet sourdough concoction baked by Sweet Mesquite Bakery. They’re essentially classic dinner rolls split in half—between its heft and the way Clutch toasts the bread, this bun is the tastiest (and most durable) I’ve ever encountered.

One thing I’d love to see down the line at Clutch is an option for more heat. The Clutch Burger itself is a masterpiece and I wouldn’t change a thing, but one or two additional menu selections—I’d LOVE to see something akin to Lankford’s Grim Reaper or Moon Tower’s Grim Creeper at Clutch—would help generate even more repeat business.
