Friday, October 16, 2026 — Katy’s smashburger scene has absolutely exploded in the last 6 months. Starting with the opening of Bad Buns (a Top 3 smash spot for me in all of Houston) 2nd location across the street from Momentum Climbing Gym; we’ve since seen Smash City (my #4 smash in all of Houston) park one of its trucks right in my neighborhood on South Mason Rd across the street from Fuzzy’s; and the vaunted Burger Bodega finally fling the doors open at its 2nd-ever location on North Mason and Franz in September.
I noticed newcomer Hot Buns—over on Morton Ranch Rd just off 99, housed inside a brand-new Shell gas station mini-mart!—suddenly appearing in my feed about a month or so ago, and knew I had to check them out.
Safe to say this was an excellent decision.
Hot Buns is a smash hit right out of the gate, featuring expert-tier char and crisp on its well-seasoned patties buoyed by its delightful burger sauce. The only slight misfire for me was the beef bacon. I also added jalapeños (even though they’re not visible in my photo) because you can’t not, and I was pleased to see that a fried egg was also an option—not something you see at most smash spots.
If you are a fan of what Bad Buns is doing, you will greatly enjoy what Hot Buns is flipping 👌👍🍔
